Archive for the month “June, 2021”

Next weekend:

Although the official Middleham Festival has been cancelled, there will be a small outdoor event on Saturday 3rd July and Sunday 4th. Alex Marchant (“The Order of the White boar”) will be attending at the Castle, as will Joanne Larner and Susan Lamb, the duo behind “Dickon’s Diaries”. They will be selling their own books and those of other authors, including Annette Carson‘s new translation of Mancini.

JUNE 2021

Welcome to our second newsletter of the year,

Whilst we have had four successful open Zoom meetings, with Matthew Lewis, Elizabeth Roberts, John (posthumously) and Annette Carson, it is time to start meeting up in person again in the knowledge that the Zoom format can be useful again if the weather is against us otherwise. Many thanks to our four speakers so far.

This month, I have paid a visit to Chelmsford Cathedral (left). Like St. Edmundsbury, Leicester and the original Coventry equivalent, it is a civic church promoted during the early twentieth century, but has a much older (thirteenth century) structure, with Bourchier and deVere connections. It is small but now has two open doors and a one-way system to enable fresh air. Please report any visits you have undertaken, for our next issue.

On Saturday, I participated in the Branches and Groups Conference.  There will be some well-defined parameters for us to operate within but will clearly retain most of our autonomy. It is becoming clear that we wish to view the 1483 Ipswich charter in the Hold during July and we shall do so if possible, although there will be an alternative plan.

I look forward to meeting many of you then.

“The Mysterious Affair at Stony Stratford”

Many thanks to Annette for returning, via Zoom, to address almost a hundred Ricardians in four different continents on the afternoon of 23rd May. She explained, in great detail, who out of the Dukes of Gloucester and Buckingham, Edward V and Anthony Wydeville was probably where on 29th-30th April 1483 as they travelled the old Roman roads towards London from Yorkshire, Wales and Ludlow, as well as who stayed where and why they didn’t all use the A45 services.

Now, after four Zoom meetings, we are preparing to go out and view Richard’s 1483 Ipswich charter at The Hold. Hopefully, this will be possible in July, although there are additional factors affecting the venue and we may need a plan B.
