Horrox on the de la Poles

Two weeks after visiting Wingfield , I attended a “Wuffing Education” Study Day at Sutton Hoo, addressed by Rosemary Horrox on the de la Pole family. This juxtaposition of dates was entirely beneficial as their genealogy and history was fresh in my mind so it was easy to follow Horrox’s train of thought.

She covered the family’s commercial origins in Hull as two of three brothers, whose father’s forename is still unknown, left the city to enter the national scene, lending money to the King. Although Richard was probably William’s elder brother, their paths diverged as he sought a less acquisitive strategy and his male line descendants are less famous, expiring three generations later. William’s family is better known but trod a far more perilous path, particularly in royal moneylending. The latest on the hunt for Richard’s Y-chromosome

Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, was born today in 1338, although he died just before his thirtieth birthday. He is, of course, a mixed-line direct ancestor of Richard III but he is the brother of Edmund of Langley, Richard’s male-line great grandfather.

A Society notice

The Richard III Society Promoting research into the life and times of Richard III since 1924 Patron: HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO Bringing you the latest important news and events about Richard III. Dear Members, Members who use PayPal to buy goods from the Society shop or pay their membership subscription, will know that the Society advertises that payments are subject to a 5% surcharge to cover Bank charges. No such additional charge is levied for payments made directly by debit or credit card. As you may have seen in the Media, anybody who takes payment for goods and services by credit or debit card is, from 13th January 2018, no longer permitted by UK law to make an additional charge for the costs incurred in processing debit and credit card transactions, including those made via PayPal. The Society’s Website and literature will be amended as soon as possible to reflect removal of the requirement for PayPal users to add an additional 5% to the cost of an order or subscription. In the meantime, existing and new members are asked ensure that they only pay: the price quoted in the sales catalogue plus postage and packing when paying for goods from the Society Shop without adding the 5% the standard cost for the appropriate category of membership, ignoring the PayPal fee For PayPal payments received by the Society on or after 13th January 2018, refunds will of course be issued to anyone who has paid too much as a result of including the PayPal surcharge. The Executive Committee is most grateful to those members who include a donation to the Society with sales orders and subscriptions as this helps to cover overheads including Bank charges.
